This Dubai bloke just splashed out Dhs4.1 million on a phone number

Remember that Dubai businessman, Balwinder Sahani, who spent Dhs33 million on the D5 number plate last year?

Well, he’s gone ahead and splashed out a further Dhs4.1 million on a mobile phone number in an auction at the Grand Hyatt on Saturday, according to the Khaleej Times.

Lavish? Hell yeah. Let’s just remind ourselves that for the same price Sahani could’ve flat-out bought himself a villa in Arabian Ranches.

They even made a cake, because that’s what you do when you get a sweet phone number, right? We don’t know, our phone numbers suck.

Wondering what the number is? It’s 058-8888888. However, it’s unlikely Sahani will ever get a chance to use it.

“I can never use this number. I got it in my hands at 8.30pm today and till now, within just two hours, I’ve received 1,000 calls,” he told Khaleej Times.

It’s not as big of a waste of money as you may think. As it turns out, all the money being spent at the auction will go to charity.

Splashing out on collector’ items is a bit of a thing for Sahani, who told Gulf News last year after buying the famous D5 plate, “I like collecting unique number plates and I am proud to have got this number. I like number nine and D5 adds up to nine, so I went for it.”

D5 is not the only mega-expensive plate Sahani has in his collection, having spent Dhs25 million on an O9 plate in 2015.

“I have collected 10 number plates so far and I am looking forward to having more. It’s a passion.”
