Because we all need the occasional break from city life…
Let’s face it, Dubai’s earned its rightful slot as a booming metropolitan hub with a flashy reputation. However, it’s not all chromed-out Lamborghinis and silly-sized malls, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy emirate.
We’re pleased-as-punch that Dubai’s surrounded by vast swathes of sand.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing gathering with a few buddies, or a tour given from a picnic basket beneath a balloon, there are a number of unique ways to make the most of the desert landscape.
Here are our top 5 things to do in the Dubai desert.
1. Desert Safari
Now, this wouldn’t be a Dubai desert list without the inclusion of this excursion. We’ll be honest though, Desert Safari is really just a roundabout way of saying “dune bashing on the way to an Arabic-styled tent with camel rides”.
In a nutshell, it’s a tourist’s go-to way of experiencing the desert with all the necessary Arabic flair.
Be warned though, the dunes are nothing to scoff at. If you’re not exactly the adrenaline-seeking type, you may want to have a little word with your driver before you set off. Tilting at a 50-degree angle in a four-by-four at the crest of a sand-mountain is not everyone’s cup of tea.
The best part? Being able to dip into Arabic culture once you arrive at the tent set-up for some traditional dances, food and camels.
Sure, it’s a bit of a step up from henna tattoos in a teepee, but if you’re a real adrenaline junkie that loves the combination of speed and catching air then this’ll be right up your street. The group behind the activity, the MX Academy houses their own desert race track and bike rental.
Utter newbie? Not to worry. You’ll be trained up in the art of catching sweet air in no time.
Or, you could go for the easier route, a relaxing desert cruise through the Dubai desert.
Sure, Man Vs. Wild might’ve taught you that deserts are notoriously freezing at night, but the cool desert air tends to make for a relaxing break from the relentless daytime heat. Besides, just build a big enough fire and you’ll have nothing to worry about.
If you’re in the mood for a literal star-studded evening coupled with a nice fire, winter-weather comforts and good company, it’s a mere 20-minute drive from the city.
4. Hot Air Ballooning
Planning a romantic date? Or maybe a proposal? This is by far one of the most memorable ways to pull off a grand romantic gesture.
Or if you reside in Singletown, and just fancy nabbing a sweet view of the desert from a bird’s point of view, this is a new experience that’s sure to satisfy your need for something slightly out-of-the-ordinary.
5. Sand Boarding
Psh, who said you needed to venture out into the mountains to hit the slopes? Granted, a sandboard is slightly differently designed to a snowboard, it’s allegedly doable with a snowboard as well (but don’t take our word for it).
If you’re keen on tearing up some sand dunes while the weather is still bearable, you can nab yourself a sandboard in Mall of The Emirates’ GoSport outlet, complete with a special wax that makes you go zoom.
Regardless of whatever apparatus you decide to go with – be it plywood or professional – it’s a laugh.
